For most of my career, I grew wheat and barley near Wasco, Oregon. I started farming in 1975—initially in partnership with my father. Since 1977, I’ve been an active member of the Oregon Wheat Growers League (OWGL), serving as president in 2001. I served on the Oregon Wheat Commission from July of 2008 to June of 2012. Since 1994, I’ve also been active with the Oregon Farm Bureau, serving as its Sherman County President in 1996 and as a member of the Oregon Farm Bureau Tax Advisory Committee. In 2008, I was appointed to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Federal Deficit Task Force and attended many meetings in Washington, D.C. during 2009. My experience on the Deficit Task force sparked my current interest in the development of Oregon’s Coordinated Care Organizations (CCO’s) and in health care reform.
I served on the Oregon Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors from 1991 to 2000 and on the OSHA Small Employers Advisory Committee beginning in 1995. In Sherman County, I served on my grain cooperative’s board of directors for 11 years and on the high school board of directors for 4 years. I received the Sherman County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Cooperator of the Year Award in 1995 and 2007. I retired from wheat farming after the 2009 harvest. Rich Read, a writer at the Oregonian, happened to call me on my last day and wrote an article about my retirement.
In February of 2013, a good friend died and I was appointed to serve out the remaining two years of his term on the Sherman County Court. I discovered that I enjoyed the challenge of being one of our three Commissioners and won four-year terms of my own in the November 2014 and November 2018 elections. So, I’m now back in the workforce dealing with the many interesting issues facing my county.
I received an AB degree from Harvard College in 1965 and a PhD degree in economics from Stanford University. Before I started farming, I taught economics at Williams College in Massachusetts from 1971 to 1975. I’ve been married to my wife, Nancy, for 53 years. We have two daughters and four granddaughters.
